Wyre Council have announced their intention to upgrade the local leisure centres in Thornton and Poulton in Lancashire.

The council have just announced that they have received planning permission to build a brand new leisure centre in Thornton. The investment, which totals £5 million, will include funding for a ten pin bowling alley, two outside sport pitches, and a brand new indoor skatepark.

The Thornton’s centre is currently located on Victoria Road East, and the council hopes that the new facilities will make it one of the largest leisure centres on the Fylde Coast.

Councillor Lynne Bowen, Cabinet member with responsibility for leisure at Wyre Council, published the following statement: “We are determined to reinvent leisure, providing something a little bit different alongside the more traditional leisure facilities that people come to expect.

“Choosing attractions that appeal to visitors as well as residents will widen our customer base, which in turn should reduce the amount of public money needed to run our centres.

They have an exciting future and I for one can’t wait to see the end results.”

Details about what is contained in the skatepark haven’t been released, although we do know that the skatepark will be called Air skate park and the council are aiming to open the park on 1st May 2015. Let’s hope everything goes as planned.
